GINGERBREAD HISTORY
Gingerbread was STARTED by a sparky young single mum, Tessa Fothergrill, in 1970. She chose the name because the cafe, the Golden Age of Gingerbread, gave her free coffee and emotional support when she was homeless and roaming the streets of west London looking for somewhere to live.
She thought Gingerbread would be a good name for a support group because:- 'Ginger' for gingering up support or getting help from the authorities'. 'Bread' the money and resources one-parent families need to support themselves and each other'.
Since then the divorce rate in Britain has trebled and Gingerbread has been a constant force actively campaigning to improve the lot of lone parents. Nowadays, we aim to do two things: offer lone parents and their children advice, information and emotional support, practical help and speak out for them in the media and politics.
In 2007 Gingerbread merged with One Parent Familes and up until recently the organisation was known as One Parent Familes/GINGERBREAD. However, on the 19th January 2009 the organisation was relaunched and is now known once again as Gingerbread. |
